IRS Agents Protest Possible Cuts

DETROIT (WWJ) - IRS employees in Detroit took to the streets in protest Wednesday. About 60 or so workers at the IRS Detroit Computing Center on Michigan Avenue protested outside the building over concerns that Congress is contemplating cuts in staff, benefits, and forcing furlough days on employees.

"Federal workers serve with a purpose, and we serve with heart and we want to do the best job we can. But when you cut us back in staffing and you furlough us, it creates greater problems for us to try to do more with less," says Deborah Carter with the National Treasury Employees Union.

Carter says even income tax refund checks could be delayed if IRS workers are furloughed.

"If we are furloughed, which they are proposing, a two week long furlough or more, that will certainly impact the services we provide," Carter says.
