Ikea Expanding Solar Array Atop Canton Store

CANTON TWP. (WWJ/AP) - Swedish retailer Ikea is expanding the size of a solar array atop its store in metro Detroit.

Plans call for 765 new panels to be installed starting in the spring. They'll be installed on top of the store's 44,000-square-foot expansion, which has been under construction since September.

The target for completion is next summer, increasing the total number of panels at the store to 4,925. The company says the solar array will produce the equivalent of enough energy to power 135 homes.

"We are thrilled at the opportunity to increase the amount of solar energy generated and used by this store," Matt Hunsicker, IKEA Canton store manager, said in a statement. "This is another example of the IKEA commitment to create a more sustainable life for communities where we operate."

For the development, design and installation of this store's enhanced solar power system, IKEA selected Inovateus Solar LLC, a solar power distributor and integrator specializing in large-scale solar installations.
