If You're Happy And You Know It...Do You Live In Detroit?
DETROIT (WWJ) - Where do the happiest people live? A new Gallup-Healthways Well Being Index says it's not Michigan. In fact, WWJ Newsradio 950's Beth Fisher reports the least happy people live in one of Detroit's congressional districts.
It's Michigan Congressional district 13, which encompasses Detroit, some downriver suburbs, and Grosse Pointe. Gallup called 1000 randomly selected adults every day for three years, asking them about their emotional status, work, stress, among other things.
Data Driven Detroit Director Kurt Metzger says it's been a tough few years in Detroit.
"When you look at the 13th District, and you look at some of the conditions, maybe not in the Grosse Pointes, but certainly because Detroit takes in so much of it... loss, I mean, is certainly economically driven," says Metzger.
"I think that tends to, you know, it's hard to have a, get up in the morning with a big smile on your face, feeling really good when either you don't have a job or you look around and you've got vacant homes or homes that are need to be torn down. It does tend to color your view of the world," Metzger adds.
But, he sees more happiness in this study in Grand Rapids, Lansing, and Ann Arbor. By the way, Gallup's happiest guy lives in Hawaii , is 69, and makes more than $120,000 dollars a year.
