House To Stay In Session During Annual Mackinac Policy Conference

LANSING (AP) - Republican Speaker Kevin Cotter and other members of the Michigan House will stay in session to vote on legislation instead of attending the Detroit Regional Chamber's annual policy conference on Mackinac Island.

The meeting is scheduled for May 31-June 3. Legislators typically do not vote on the Thursday so they can attend the meeting that attracts politicians, business leaders and others.

Cotter's spokesman says he will be at the Capitol "voting on the bills we've got on the floor" and working on the next state budget and a restructuring of Detroit's ailing school district. Gov. Rick Snyder and senators are still expected to attend the conference.

The chamber has been outspoken in its criticism of the House's plan to address Detroit Public Schools' troubles and instead supports the Senate's proposal.
