Help Needed To Feed Hungry Kids This Summer
DETROIT (WWJ) - A lot of Metro Detroit kids are looking forward to the end of the school year -- but for some, summer means hunger.
During the academic year, Southeast Michigan schools serve more than 300,000 free or low-cost breakfasts and lunches. But many kids who qualify for those meals at school often go without during the summer months.
Children's Hospital of Michigan is collecting cereal to help meet that need.
"It's devastating," said Pam Taurence, who is coordinating a week-long drive. "It acts on their they're psychological well-being, they're mental well-being; their physical well-being."
"If they're not getting such a good lunch, than at least they're getting a good breakfast," Taurence told WWJ Health Reporter Sean Lee. "Truly, there are many kids that will eat a bowl of cereal for breakfast. They'll eat it again for dinner -- whatever it takes, as long as we know that we're making a different and we're getting these kids some nutrition, that's the important thing."
You can help feed hungry kids in Southeast Michigan this summer by donating cereal or cash to the drive.
