Habitat For Humanity To Go On House Building 'Blitz'

DETROIT (WWJ) -- Habitat for Humanity Detroit will kick off its 2014 Fall Blitz Build in the Morningside Commons neighborhood on the city's east side starting on Saturday morning.

The group will aim to complete the construction of seven homes in seven days with the help of nearly 2,000 volunteers who look to provid low-income families with safe, affordable, energy-efficient housing.

"We are committed to rebuilding Detroit one neighborhood at a time," Executive Director Vincent Tiliford said. "We are very appreciative and proud of the corporate and faith-based sponsors who have provided funds and volunteers to build these homes. Together we are building homes, communities and hope."

Former Michigan State and NBA basketball player Morris Peterson will be on hand to help raise the first set if walls.

Habitat Detroit started its community revitalization work in the Morningside neighborhood in 2006 and will complete its 107th house in the community during the build.
