GVSU Adds Konami Easter Egg To Website

ALLENDALE, Mich. (WWJ) - Grand Valley State University has entered the world of geek chic, with a video game buried in its recently-designed website. By pressing the right sequence of keys, an 8-bit "80s" version of Louie the Laker pops up and you get to kick footballs around the screen while a "midi" version of the school's fight song plays. Grand Valley web manager Dave Poortvliet is the one who added what's called the Konami Code.

"It's from, kind of the old Nintendo game codes, where you could enter that code and get some free lives on certain video games, and then we wanted to have something fun appear, so we decided to do kind of an 8-bit, like old school-looking Louie the Laker dancing around with some 8-bit music, our fight song and some footballs flying around,"Poortvliet said.

Poortvliet says plenty of sites across cyberspace have Konami codes buried in them, but he thinks they're probably the first in the GLIAC to have one.

To play the video game, visit the GVSU website here. The key sequence is: up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A.
