Gunman Sought In Death Of 3-Year-Old Girl
DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee is asking for the public's help in finding the gunman responsible for the shooting death of a 3-year-old girl.
"This nonsense has to stop," Godbee said, speaking to reporters on Monday. "It's the irresponsible actions of adults and their inability to resolve conflict that has resulted in the loss of the life of a 3-year-old," he said.
Three bullet holes through an apartment window were left behind where Aarie Berry was shot Sunday night on the city's east side.
Antoine Sherrod, who lives across the street, said the shooting was the result of a fight among three men, one who retaliated with a gun, but the three year-old girl, an innocent bystander inside her home, was caught in the line of fire.
"There were just out here talking. Next thing you know, shots just rang out. The first three went straight through that window, and the other ones hit the brick, 'cause I'd seen the sparks off of it. Her auntie came straight outside (and said), 'My niece got shot. She's dead'," Sherrod said.
Chief Godbee said those involved in the confrontation started breaking windows to get some people inside the four family flat to come out and fight. About 30 minutes later, the shooting began.
Sherrod said the girl's family had nothing to do with the fight. "I can picture the little girl playing ... she won't play no more," he said.
A woman who also lives across the street said she is now afraid to work on her flower garden in front of her house.
The investigation continues.
Crime Stoppers is offering a $2,500 reward for tips leading to a conviction in this case.
