Gold Cup Soccer Coming To Detroit
DETROIT (WWJ) - Only three soccer teams have ever won the Gold Cup, and two of them will do battle at Ford Field this coming Tuesday, June 7, when Landon Donovan and team USA plays Dwayne De Rosario and team Canada. Soccer aficionado Joel Epstein, who reported for WWJ during the '94 World Cup in Pontiac, says this will be a border war.
"There will be tons of people coming over from Canada, to watch their team try to beat the U.S. which they have not done in the last 13 trys. The U.S. is overall 12-8-9 against Canada and have not lost to them since 1985," said Epstein.
Epstein said the rivalry isn't just in the stands, either. Will Johnson, who plays with Major League Soccer's Real Salt Lake and who holds dual citizenship, has decided to play for Team Canada. Likewise, Duane De Rosario, who plays with the MLS's New York Redbulls is also playing for Team Canada.
