Garbage Truck Hits I-75 Underpass, Sending Concrete Crashing Down

MADISON HEIGHTS (WWJ) - Traffic came screeching to a halt Monday along I-75 when a  garbage truck hit an underpass, knocking concrete down onto the freeway below.

WWJ Newsradio 950's Keven Sanderson reported the truck was traveling eastbound on 12 Mile Road in Madison Heights, striking the I-75 bridge.

There were no reported injuries, but eastbound 12 Mile has been closed for hours at I-75 because of the problem. The right lane of southbound I-75 at 12 Mile is also closed, as well as the 12 Mile westbound ramp to I-75.

A cleanup crew is at work and an investigation is underway, according to Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) spokewoman Diane Cross.

"We've got folks coming in from Lansing who are gonna examine the bridge with us, and we're gonna then determine: Is everything OK? Is it a cosmetic thing? Is it a bigger issue?" Cross said.

"Unfortunately it looks like a garbage hauler may have had its boom up in the back," Cross added. "Now, that is an early guess as to what happened — but there was a truck that had that back end up too high, and it struck the bridge, so we closed traffic because of the concrete that has come down onto the roadway."

As the afternoon commute began, traffic was slow along I-75 southbound from before Rochester Road.
