Free Skin Cancer Screenings Offered Wednesday

WEST BLOOMFIELD (WWJ) - A group of metro Detroit doctors is working to save lives with free skin cancer screenings.

Dermatology and Cosmetic Associates in West Bloomfield is offering the free cancer screenings on Wednesday, July 16, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

"Skin cancer is unique in that it is the only cancer you can see on the surface of the skin. A skin cancer screening is a visual, non-invasive exam that only takes a few minutes, yet it could save a person's life," said Dr. Heather Roebuck. "One person dies from melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, every hour. Yet melanoma is often successfully treated, if caught early."

The event is part of the American Academy of Dermatology's SPOT Skin CancerTM national initiative which has provided more than 2.2 million screenings since its inception in 1985.

The screening is a visual, non-invasive exam and it only takes a few minutes. There will also be family friendly activities on site.

The screenings are free, but you do need to make a reservation by calling 248-855-7453. To learn more about what to expect at a screening or to find other free skin cancer screenings in your area, visit SpotSkinCancer.org.
