Former Tigers catcher Alex Avila has a new home, according to the team, and it's within the same division.

Avila (the son of Tigers general manager and vice president of baseball operations, Al) has spent his entire major league career in Detroit. In seven seasons with the Tigers, Avila batted .242 with 66 home runs, 282 RBI and 653 strikeouts. He batted .191 in 67 games this season, adding four home runs and 13 RBI.

Avila will head to Chicago, which finished just ahead of the Tigers in the AL Central this season, at 76-86.

"Alex gives us a veteran presence behind the plate who provides solid defense and a productive left-handed bat," Rick Hahn, White Sox general manager, said in a statement Wednesday.

At catcher, the Tigers still have James McCann and Bryan Holaday on the 40-man roster. McCann was recently named the Tigers' Rookie of the Year by the Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association, and batted .264 in 114 games this season.
