Former Detroit Lions Defender Sam Williams Dies

DETROIT (AP) — Former Detroit Lions defensive end and "Fearsome Foursome" member Sam Williams has died at age 82.

Sam Williams says his father whose name he shares died Thursday following an illness at St. Mary Mercy Hospital in Livonia.

His father played in Detroit from 1960 to 1965 after a year with the Los Angeles Rams. He spent his final two NFL seasons in Atlanta.

Williams played on a Lions defensive line that included Alex Karras, Roger Brown and Darris McCord.

He grew up in Dansville outside Lansing and starred in football at Michigan State University.

Visitation is 2-7 p.m. Saturday at L.J. Griffin Funeral Home in Westland. Funeral services are at 1 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Williams is survived by his wife Lois, two sons and two sisters.
