Falling Marshmallows Send Thrilled Kids Scrambling

WESTLAND (WWJ) - The weather was perfect on Friday for a sugar "blizzard" to descend over Nankin Mills Park in Westland.

More than 20,000 marshmallows were  dropped from a helicopter to the eager delight of thousands of children, who scrambled to collect the goodies and trade them in for a prize.

With powdered sugar all over his face, 3-year-old Mason Davidson could hardly contain his excitement, as he munched on a plump -- and now moderately muddy -- marshmallow that had fallen from the sky.

And with his mouth full of the pre-Easter treat, did his best to show and tell WWJ Newsradio 950's Karthryn Larson how he had obtained it.

"Running ... and grabbing, " he mumbled.

Organizers of Wayne County Parks' 29th annual event, as they do each year, urged families not to eat the fallen treats -- although that wasn't stopping anyone.

Kyle Michael Davies, age 5, complained that his little brother had made off with a couple of his marshmallows. Nearby,  4-year-old Megan Minor plopped hers one-by-one into her mouth.

Other kids traded in their marshmallows for Smarties candies and activity books.
