EMU To Host Michigan Collegiate Job Fair Nov. 15: College seniors and alumni from Michigan's two-or-four year colleges will have a valuable opportunity to talk with prospective employers at the bi-annual Michigan Collegiate Job Fair. This popular event, sponsored by Eastern Michigan University and supported by the Michigan Career Educator and Employer Alliance, is scheduled Friday, Nov. 15, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Burton Manor, 27777 Schoolcraft Rd. at I-96 in Livonia. Prospective employees are encouraged to pre-register online before Nov. 13 for only $10. Walk-in registration is $15. An up-to date list of participating employers can be found at The event is seeing a continued upswing in jobs, organizers say. There also will be a booth on how to use Linkedin for networking. New employers currently registered for the fair include: Ohio Business Machines, Semyung USA, Spiders Software Solutions LLC, Transportation Research Center, Unishippers Global Logistics LLC, and The University of Michigan Health System – Medical Center IT. Other participants are eight State of Michigan agencies, four U.S. government agencies, Hewlett Packard, IBM, Masco Cabinetry, ProMedica Health System, Quicken Loans, Target, and Total Quality Logistics. The Michigan Collegiate Job Fair is one of the largest and longest running job fair events in the state. More than 700 job candidates are expected to attend.

A2Y Chamber To Announce Winners For Deals of the Year Friday: Each year the Ann Arbor / Ypsilanti Regional Chamber recognize outstanding talent in the Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti communities with the Distinguished Service
Award and the Small Business Person of the Year award. These award recipients are nominated by their employees, co-workers, and other business professionals in the area. The Distinguished Service award, sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield, is presented to the person who has made outstanding contributions to the betterment of the community through endless hours of work, service, and dedication. This year's award recipient is John
Barr, an attorney with Barr, Anhut & Associates P.C. in Ypsilanti. Barr has been practicing law in Washtenaw County since 1959. He has been awarded several times for honors such as the Distinguished Municipal Attorney Award by the Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys in 1993, as well as the Frank Kelly Distinguished Public Service Award from the State Bar of Michigan in 2012. Barr has served with the Boy Scouts of America, on the Board of Trustees of the Ypsilanti District Library, a board member of the Public Housing Commission and other community organizations. He's also been active in the legal community, as a commissioner of the State Bar of
Michigan and president of the Washtenaw County Bar Association and the Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys. The Small Business Person of the Year award, also sponsored by the Blues, is presented to an individual
who owns an established business (in businesses for three or more years), has 100 or fewer employees, supports the business community (chamber member in good standing for one year or more), and has a demonstrated
community involvement, business growth in the past two years, and a strong response to adversity. This year's Small Business Person of the Year is Kevin Van Kannel, president of University Office Technologies. Van Kannel bought University Office Technologies (Utech) in October 2007. At that point, the company had nine employees. Today, Utech has 31 employees and is still growing. Through Van Kannel's innovative ideas to meet customer needs, his most recent success has been the development of an IT department to increase Utech's support for small to medium size companies. In 2012 and 2013, Utech was award "Platinum Service" the highest service level by Sharp Business Systems. Within the last two years Van Kannel has also developed a unique business model which enabled local schools to have more copies at a price they could afford and lower their copy and printing costs as well. Van Kannel has been very involved with community service, supporting The Safe House Center, Plymouth Whalers, Washtenaw County 4-H, Ypsilanti Pride Day and many more. Van Kannel also participated in the hiring of a "special needs" individual, helping to teach them the needed skills to be in the workforce. With the help of Van Kannel and his wife, Carolyn, the individual is now a manager at a nationwide grocer in their produce department. Barr and Van Kannel will receive their awards on Friday, Nov. 1 during the VIP Cocktail Reception prior to the Deals of the Year Event. Walsh College Welcomes Future Students to the Fall Open House: Walsh College is hosting an open house from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14 at its Novi campus, 41500 Gardenbrook Road (off Meadowbrook, just north of
Grand River Avenue). Attendees will have the opportunity to meet with an adviser (bring your transcript for on-site evaluation of your transfer credits), transfer up to 82 credits (learn how to transfer credits toward your undergraduate degree), and learn about Walsh College academic programs, online degrees, financial aid, student organizations, and career services. All undergraduate and graduate application fees will be waived. Refreshments
will be provided. There will also be an information session held on Blackstone LaunchPad, which offers free entrepreneurial services to Walsh College students and alumni. The session will begin at 6 p.m. No registration is
necessary to attend the Open House or the Blackstone LaunchPad information session.
