UM Bladder Cancer Support Group Beats The Drum For Awareness At Event: The University of Michigan Department of Urology and the Comprehensive Cancer Center's Bladder Cancer Support Group -- one of the first of its kind in the nation geared specifically toward bladder cancer -- will hold a dinner-dance in celebration of the first-ever national Bladder Cancer Awareness Day on July 17. The Americana-style event will be held from 5:30-11 p.m. at the Family Center on 420 North St. in Milan. Ticket price is $35 per person, or $17.50 for children under 12. Children under 5 are free. Admission includes hors d'oeuvres, a gourmet dinner buffet, pastry assortment, coffee and punch in addition to participation in the scheduled program events, including survivor testimonials, bladder bingo and dancing. Also on hand will be experts in bladder cancer from UM and the American Cancer Society, a relaxation station with representatives and activities from U-M and The Wellness Community of Southeast Michigan, a kid-o-rama with activities for kids, a silent auction and door prizes. The Bladder Cancer Support Group is regularly attended by at least 40 participants who are either newly diagnosed bladder cancer patients, patients undergoing treatment or family members of bladder cancer patients. The group actively partakes in support activities such as roundtable discussions and educational seminars to provide information and guidance on living and coping with bladder cancer. All event proceeds will go directly to the group for future educational and awareness offerings.

Automotive X Prize To Show Off At Inaugural Great Lakes Wine Festival: The $10 million Progressive Insurance Automotive X Prize, an international competition to spur a new generation of viable, super fuel efficient vehicles, will showcase several competition vehicles at the Great Lakes Wine Festival June 26-27 at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn. Festival attendees will have the opportunity to meet the teams, hear their stories and see the vehicles and technologies that will shape the future of the automotive industry. In addition, competition officials will be on hand to explain how teams must demonstrate their vehicles are safe, efficient and able to achieve 100 MPGe (miles per gallon or the energy equivalent). Progressive Insurance Automotive X Prize competition vehicles will be on display throughout the festival, which offers attendees two full days of live entertainment, educational seminars and beer, wine and food sampling from Michigan-based vendors.  An information booth will also be hosted by the Michigan Economic Development Corp., a partner in the X Prize. Flint to host UM urban real estate forum: The 24th Annual University of Michigan/Urban Land Institute Real Estate Forum will be convened at The Riverside Center in Downtown Flint Nov. 10 and 11. Themed "Sparking Reinvention: The Evolution Of A Factory Town," the event will showcase how Flint is ahead of the curve with respect to grassroots leadership, development, land banks, urban agriculture, rightsizing the city, maximizing open space, reclaiming the riverfront, universities and foundations leading economic development, neighborhood stabiliization, a clean, green and walkable downtown, and rapid growth in higher education.
