Driver Pleased To Return To Detroit For Belle Isle Grand Prix
DETROIT (WWJ) - It's been four years since the last Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix, and driver Oriol Servia of Spain can barely contain his excitement for the race, which kicks off June 1.
"The fact that it didn't come for a couple of years made people more excited for it to come back," said Servia, who originally is from Spain.
He also switched engines from a Lotus to a Chevy in preparation for the race, and visited the track Monday afternoon to see what he has to work with.
"It's a challenging track," he said. "It has some areas with asphalt, some with concrete, so it's tough for engineers to come up with the best setup."
Servia jazzed up his helmet, a race car driver's pride and joy.
"... I have the face of Salvadore Dali on the side because I'm from the same region as the painter and I've always liked his work. And on the back I have a little sketch of the trophy of the 500," he said.
Servia said he hopes Detroiters are ready to come out to see the race.
The Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix runs June 1-3. Free Prix practice day begins at 10:55 a.m. that Friday.
