Dramatic Video Released Of I-696 State Trooper Injury Crash [VIDEO]

SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - Dramatic video has been released of a freeway crash that destroyed a Michigan State Police car and sent a trooper to the hospital with serious injuries.

The footage, captured on traffic camera, shows the incident involving an MSP vehicle parked on the right side of westbound I-696 near M-10, the Lodge in Southfield Monday morning.

Michigan State Police First Lt. Mike Shaw said the trooper — who suffered multiple broken ribs and a broken leg — remained hospitalized Tuesday and will stay another night for observation after complaining of trouble breathing.

As an investigation continues, Shaw is wondering why no one stopped to help.

He told WWJ's Zahra Huber he was surprised.

"When you first watch the video I think that was something that everybody through our command discussed was the sheer impact of that crash, first of all, and how lucky that trooper was to be alive, that nobody else was injured, and frankly now nobody really stopped," said Shaw.

"They kind of picked their way between the vehicles that were involved in the crash and went about their business — didn't even pull over to the side of the road to become a witness or anything like that."

Shaw said it's important to move over or at least slow down when you come upon a crash site on the freeway. Certainly, stopping to help is a judgement call and police continue to urge motorist caution when pulling over on he freeway when it's possible to do so safely.

The video then shows a large stake truck driving in the right lane and slamming into the back of an MSP vehicle as Shaw says the trooper inside was shielding other troopers who were working an earlier traffic accident up ahead.

The crash sends that MSP car flying under the overpass and onto the left side of the freeway.

Shaw said police believe the truck driver was trying to change lanes when he lost control. Possible charges are pending.

Also seen on the video: the motorist involved in the initial crash police were investigating is taken into custody. Shaw said that driver is suspected of drunken driving.
