Disbarred Lawyer Sentenced To At Least 6 Years In Prison

PETOSKEY, Mich. (AP) - A disbarred lawyer in northern Michigan who admits stealing money from an elderly client with Alzheimer's disease has been sentenced to at least six years in prison.

Michael A. Kennedy of Petoskey got his sentence Monday, two months after pleading guilty in Emmet County court. He's been ordered to pay $1.1 million in restitution.

An investigation began in 2012 after the Internal Revenue Service alerted the victim's family of problems with her trust. The 67-year-old Kennedy had transferred money into his office checking account beginning in 2006 until the trust was drained.

Legal limits forced investigators to focus on 2009 and subsequent years.

Kennedy will be eligible for parole after six years in prison. He was disbarred as a lawyer 11 months ago.
