DETROIT – Computers, the Internet and Facebook were many decades away when the Tigers first took the field in 1901, but the fan support has been strong from the very beginning. That tradition of support has carried on even stronger into the information age, and made the Detroit Tigers one of baseball's leaders in social media.
One of the key components of the Tigers social media effort, the Tigers Official Facebook page, reached a major milestone Tuesday night by topping one million "Likes" to become just the fourth American League club to reach the one million mark. The Tigers are the first American League Central team to reach one million and the 10th in Major League Baseball.
To commemorate the Tigers surpassing one million "Likes", all Tigers Facebook followers will be eligible to enter a sweepstakes beginning Monday, May 21 at noon on tigers.com with a grand prize of four tickets to an upcoming game with a VIP batting practice viewing experience and a Miguel Cabrera autographed baseball! (*out of market fans have the option of receiving a free MLB.TV subscription plus an autographed Miguel Cabrera baseball).
The Tigers plan to continue growing their strong presence on Facebook, and also on Twitter at the Club's official Twitter account @Tigers, and @TigresdeDetroit. "Social media is an integral part of the fan experience, and we are constantly seeking new ways to engage directly with loyal Tigers fans," said Tigers' Vice President of Marketing Ellen Hill Zeringue. "It all starts with unique content, and Tigers fans have demonstrated an exciting response to the Tigers on both Facebook and Twitter, and this milestone is attributable to their support."
