Detroit Council: We Don't Need An Emergency Manager
DETROIT (WWJ) - City Council leaders have assured Michigan Governor Rick Snyder that Detroit doesn't need an Emergency Financial Manager.
In a sit down meeting with Governor Rick Snyder this week, City Council president Charles Pugh told the state's chief executive there was no need to implement Michigan's new emergency financial manager law where Detroit is concerned.
"The budget was a major focus of that discussion, and the seriousness of what Detroit has to do. We were very clear to the Governor that we don't need an emergency manager. We don't need any steps leading up to an emergency manager. The mayor and the council, we have what it takes to get it done," Pugh said.
"We have the staffs, we know the priorities for the community, we have the courage to make these tough decisions," he said.
Plus, he says they have the experience of having done it last year.
Under the new law passed this week, emergency financial managers will be appointed by the state, with Governor Snyder's approval, to take control of struggling municipalities and school districts.
