Revising Detroit City Charter A Step Closer

A major step in revising Detroit's City Charter has been made as members of Charter Revision Commission met Saturday to set the rules.

The Charter Revision Commission spent the afternoon reviewing, discussing then adopting the rules that will guide them in accepting or rejecting proposed changes to the charter.

WWJ's Stephanie Davis spoke with Janice Mitchell-Ford, Chair of the Commission, "The intention is to adopt rules that will allow us to efficiently and effectively go through all 550 proposed charter revisions that we have recieved....to get to the crux of those things that are really going to make it into a charter."
"The charter is the foundation of the city government, it is the still frame to the car, it's the foundation to the house, it's tedious work, you know we've been sitting here for a couple of hours just going through words, but that the type of  hands on, making sausage work that it's going to take to make this right." Said Mitchell-Ford. "Once we get the rules in place we start on Tuesday, Jan. 11, making the sausage, so once we get the rules in place for process, we'll jump right into looking at all of these revisions." Mitchell-Ford told WWJ.

One of the suggestions calls for a change in Detroit's form of government from a mayor's structure to a city manager system. You can view all 550 recommended changes, some that came from the Mayor, City Council and citizens, by clicking here.
