Detroit Boy Crashes Mom's SUV On Joyride

DETROIT (WWJ) - An 11-year-old boy who stole his mom's SUV is hospitalized after losing control and crashing on Detroit's west side early Wednesday morning.

WWJ's Ron Dewey reports the boy's mother was sleeping around 3:30 a.m. when the boy took the car keys and decided to go for a spin.

The joyride ended when the boy crashed the Dodge Journey into a utility pole near Joy Road and Spinosa, just east of Telegraph.

The car ended up on its side with the utility pole through the driver's seat, and the child wrapped around it but still alive.

Courtney Morrison ran through Rouge Park after hearing the screeching tires, seeing the car flip over three times before coming to rest on top of that sheered utility pole and hearing cries for help.

"The little boy said 'Tell my mom I'm sorry. Please tell her I'm sorry,' and 'I hope I'm not in a whole lot of trouble.' I just told him that his mother is going to prefer to see him alive if anything and just be still and don't move," she said.

Crews worked for roughly 40 minutes to get the boy out of the mangled vehicle.

The child, who's about 4 feet tall and 65 pounds, was taken to the hospital for caution and is expected to recover.

Police say the boy reached speeds of 70 to 90 miles per hour before crashing.

This is reportedly not the first time the boy has taken his parents' vehicle for a joyride.
