Dearborn Officer Placed On Leave After Fatal Shooting Of Unarmed Man
DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) - Dearborn police say an officer involved in the fatal shooting of an unarmed Detroit man has been placed on administrative leave.
The department says Wednesday in a release that it is cooperating with Detroit police and remains "dedicated to maintaining transparency throughout the investigation" into 35-year-old Kevin Matthews' death.
Matthews was shot multiple times Dec. 23. Police have said he struggled with the Dearborn officer following a foot chase from that city into a nearby Detroit backyard.
Police also have said Matthews was involved in an earlier larceny in Dearborn and was wanted by another police agency on a misdemeanor warrant.
The Dearborn officer's name has not been released. A police watchdog group has called for the officer's suspension.
Detroit police and the state police are investigating the shooting.
