Classic Cars Line Up For Retro Gas Price Event In Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM (CBS Detroit) With jaunty juke box music, employees in classic bow ties -- and with classic prices to match -- a Birmingham gas station went retro this morning.

The Mobil station on Woodward north of Maple in Birmingham celebrated "National Collector Car Appreciation Day" by rolling back gas prices to where they were when classics ruled the road.

Prices were based on the age of your car, so gas was about 30 cents a gallon for those with classic cars.

The fun event rolled out as cruisers started heating up the roads for Woodward Dream Cruise, which happens the third Saturday in August. They're already out most weekend nights in Royal Oak, Ferndale and Birmingham.

Keith Price of Ferndale gassed up his 1961 Chevy Corvair Greenbriar camper.

"This is the oldest known Corvair camper, and this is the kit that a dealer would install, and I have all the paperwork," Price said proudly.

WWJ's Charlie Langton wasn't impressed. "It's kind of ugly, though?" he said, jokingly ribbing Price, and likening his ride to Jack Kevorkian's old van.

"No, not so much, that one didn't have stripes," Price said.
