City Year Honors Young Adults
City Year Detroit is honoring a group of young leaders who've spent the last year mentoring and tutoring area students. A graduation ceremony is being held Thursday at the Compuware Headquarters to showcase the 1,700 hours of service these young adults have given.
One City Year member, 22-year-old Jessica Lovy tells WWJ says she's returning for a second year of service and encourages others to join.
"It's an experience that I can honestly say I would have never gotten at another point in my life. You're learning so much more about yourself, about the city of Detroit in itself, which is beautiful," she said.
Penny Bailer, executive director for City Year Detroit, explains what it takes to be a part of the service organization. "We look for role models. We look for leaders, young adults who can work on a team, who can appreciate team work, diversity, who are passionate about making a difference," she said.
The ceremony begins at 6:30 p.m. and each City Year grad will receive a scholarship of over $5,000. Detroit city council president Charles Pugh is keynote speaker.
