Budgets, Lack Of Sponsors Cancel Annual Festivities

DETROIT (WWJ) - The sour economy has been the root cause of many annual festivals, art fairs and fireworks going down the tubes.

For the last 20 years, downtown Mount Clemens was the site of the annual Mother's Day Art and Craft show. But not this year.

The art fair was to run this coming weekend, but organizers just could not find enough crafters and artists to make the show worthwhile.

When it looked like the show was not attracting interest, the registration fees were lowered, but even that did not prove to be enough of an incentive.

Meanwhile, Port Huron officials are cancelling this year's Desmond Landing fireworks show on the St. Clair River, due to lack of sponsorship.

The fireworks, which were tentatively planned for June 25, cost about $65,000.

While these events are off for this year, there are hopes they can be revived in 2012.
