Black Smoke Fills Sky Above Detroit Warehouse Fire [VIDEO]

DETROIT (WWJ) - A warehouse on Detroit's west side has gone up in flames, sending plumes of thick black smoke into the air that can be seen from several miles away.

The fire took off Thursday morning at a warehouse on Meyers Road and Lyndon Street, just north of I-96.

Steven Tinnen said he discovered the fire after following the trail of smoke on his commute.

"It just was a big fire when I got to work first thing this morning," Tinnen told WWJ's Charlie Langton. "Blazes was flying everywhere."

The fire department, which arrived on the scene around 7:15 a.m., initially had trouble accessing hydrants near the scene. By around 8 a.m., crews were finally able to get water through their lines and start firefighting efforts.

The warehouse appears to be vacant, although some say it was being used as a storage facility.

The building appears to be a total loss. No injuries were reported.

Officials say it's too early to determine a cause of the fire, which remains under investigation.

The area remains closed to traffic. Motorists are urged to avoid the area.
