Best Places To Get Alternative Wedding Cakes In Detroit

Not everyone is happy with traditional wedding cake these days. The era of having one huge cake with bride and groom miniatures on top and nothing else for dessert has passed us by. Check out the list below to find alternative ideas for desserts to serve at a wedding.

Just Baked

Just Baked started as a small cupcake shop in Livonia, and now has locations all over the metro Detroit area. It is known for its delicious cupcakes, and it also sells other desserts such as cookies. For events, Just Baked does cupcake towers with stacked cupcakes in a tree-type shape, which can feed a minimum of 25 people up to 400 people max. The cupcake towers are $50 to rent, and a six-inch topper cake to cut on top is included. The couple can also design the topper themselves. Just Baked's cupcake prices are $27.95 per dozen, and the flavors can be customized. The cupcakes can be customized as well, with flowers or leaves, for an additional charge, starting at $1 per cupcake. A $40+ fee is also charged for delivery and set-up time.

Taste Love Cupcakes

Taste Love Cupcakes is a boutique cupcake shop located in downtown Royal Oak, which opened in April 2011. It is popular for its variety of cupcake flavors as well as vegan cupcakes. For weddings, Taste Love offers cupcakes or mini-cupcakes, as well as stand rentals for $45. All cupcake stands must be returned within 24 hours. You can also order special flavors of cupcakes, and these orders must be for a dozen or more and require 72 hours advanced notice.

If cupcakes aren't your thing, then check out Washtenaw Dairy's full-service sundae bar. The bar can be tweaked to your needs and/or budget, and it can be picked up or delivered, as well as set up and cleaned up afterwards. Washtenaw Dairy can also dip the ice cream at your wedding venue. Its list of ice cream flavors includes sugar-free and fat-free options, and the ice cream, toppings, spoons and napkins are provided. Grand Traverse Pie Company

Grand Traverse Pie is known for its delicious sandwiches, pies and baked goods. For weddings, it offers what it calls "the big pie" - a 40-50 pound pie of any flavor. The pie can be served in a cup with ice cream, and the cups can be customized to your specifications. Grand Traverse also has dough "artists" that can create dough centerpieces for the top of the pie. The "big pie" ranges from $150-$200 depending on what flavor is chosen. Grand Traverse also offers mini-pies, which are often given to guests as they leave the wedding reception, and dessert trays with appetizer-type desserts for wedding rehearsal dinners. Please note that the Ann Arbor locations do not offer "the big pie" option; however, the Troy location listed here does.

Sweet Heather Anne is a pastry shop located just north of downtown Ann Arbor. The owner, Heather Anne Leavitt, is a 2007 graduate of the University of Michigan, where she majored in Art and Design. She has had the opportunity to work with Eve Aronoff (of Eve the Restaurant and currently Frita Batidos) as well as Courtney Clark of Cake Nouveau. Her shop offers dessert tables as an alternative to a wedding cake, although cakes can be included if desired. Sweet Heather Anne also has options such as custom backdrops, vintage cake stands and hand-lettered dessert tags. Bite-sized sweets are often included so that everyone can try a little bit of all the flavors offered.
