Best Places For Chicken And Waffles In Detroit

Although chicken and waffles may be a Southern tradition, there are plenty of places to find them in the Detroit area as well. Check this list for the best places to find this specialty dish.

The first thing you'll notice about Beans and Cornbread when you walk inside is that the space isn't large, but is jam-packed with people - and there's a reason for that. From their ribs, to their seafood and chicken dishes, Beans and Cornbread is fantastic. Its fried chicken ($13.50-$14.50 for dinner) is "Southern fried to perfection," as they put it, and waffles can be added for $2 extra. You can choose 2 or 3 side dishes, which range from collard greens to sweet potatoes to fried okra and more, and all dinners come with homemade cornbread and sweet potato muffins. Beans and Cornbread is in a strip mall off of Northwestern Highway, and its sister restaurant, Southern Nosh (vegetarian food), is located next door.

New Center Eatery is located at the corner of W. Grand Blvd. and Woodward, and not only does it serve chicken and waffles, but it has different varieties from which to choose. Its "original" chicken and waffles consist of four chicken wings and a Belgian waffle with butter and strawberries. You can also choose from the jazzy soul chicken and waffles, Dora Bell's delight - fried drumstick and thigh with Belgian waffle, Magnolia's Country Special - fried breast smothered in gravy, with waffle, or The Big John- fried breast and two wings, with waffle and choice of side. If you're wanting something more spicy, try The Sweet Louie, which consists of four buffalo wings, a waffle, and your choice of side dish. Metered parking is available on Woodward.

Small Plates is located near Woodward and the Broadway St. People Mover stop. The restaurant has been open for 13 years, and actually owns the trademark "small plates", a concept which many restaurants in the U.S. embrace. Though its also known for its moniker small plates, it has a chicken and waffles dish, which includes fried chicken, a buttermilk waffle, bacon, white cheddar, and maple syrup. Parking is available on the street and in garages nearby.

Social Kitchen & Bar is located in downtown Birmingham, near the corner of E. Maple and N. Old Woodward. In the spring and summertime, check out its rooftop seating. It serves chicken and waffles ($10) during brunch, which includes a maple-bacon glaze, and the dish is also served as an appetizer during lunchtime; sides are a la carte and include options like biscuits and sausage gravy ($8), warm sticky buns ($7), classic mac 'n cheese ($7), fresh cut fries ($5), and more.

Kuzzos is a form of endearment for someone who is a family member or friend, and is also the name of a new restaurant located in Detroit, which specializes in chicken and waffles. Its located in the Avenue of Fashion, and parking can be found on the street. The restaurant was actually opened by a former Lions cornerback, Ron Bartell, who is also a Detroit native. Waffle combos are served all day, and range from $7-15; try the Trey Deuce ($11, 2 waffles and 3 pieces of chicken) or the Sweet Daddy, a sweet potato waffle with fried chicken fingers. The restaurant is also well known for its red velvet waffles and sweet potato waffles, in case your dining companion isn't a fan of chicken.
