You don't have to travel to France to experience French macarons; the Detroit area has many bakeries that sell these delicious meringue, melt-in-your-mouth pastries. Check out this list for the best macarons in the Metro Detroit area.

Le Petit Prince is a French bakery in Birmingham, established in 1979, and although it has no website, you can visit it online on its Facebook page. The bakery operates Tuesdays through Sundays (closed on Mondays) and it sells French pastries, breads, gifts and cakes. Fourteen East is located in Midtown, near Wayne State, in the Park Shelton building, and this establishment is both a café and bakery. Its macarons come from Madeleine's French Patisserie, and Fourteen East also sells cookies, truffles, scones, Ethel's Edibles, muffins, tarts, brownies and more. The café was opened by Joanne Czerny, who decided to combine her loves for coffee and for art in one place. Fourteen East also has an art gallery with ever-changing exhibits, as well as a coffee bar.

Pinwheel Bakery, which can be found in downtown Ferndale, has an entire section on its website devoted to its macarons, which are $2 each (up to 50; after 50, they are $1.75 each). If you're making a "walk-in purchase," you are limited to 24 macarons, and the bakery usually carries 4-5 flavors daily. Custom orders can be made also, with a minimum 1-week notice, and the bakery also can create macaron favors for parties, showers, weddings, et cetera (prices start at $4.25 for two in a bag with a ribbon).

Love & Buttercream is located in a strip mall at the corner of Crooks and 13 Mile, and it carries all sorts of treats. Its macarons are $2 each, and the flavors range from the classics (vanilla bean, ganache, almond) to more interesting flavors, such as cookie dough, raspberry lemon and PB&J. The store also sells other goodies such as whoopie pies, cookie dough truffles, sandwich cookies, bars and more.

Cannelle Patisseries is located a little bit off the beaten path. The bakery can be found in Birmingham, but near the corner of N. Eton and Maple, instead of in downtown. The shop is run by proprietor Matt Knio, who opened his first shop in Applegate Square (Southfield) in 2003. He called this original shop Cannella Patisserie. Knio then moved the bakery to Hamilton Row (downtown Birmingham) in 2005. That shop closed in 2008 and reopened in 2013 in its current location. Along with its delicious French macarons, the bakery also serves chocolate truffles, pies, croissants and other French goods, like baguettes and tortes; you can order a baguette sandwich here as well.
