Best Bakeries In Metro Detroit For Pie Day

Pie Day is March 14th (3.14 - get it?), and Detroit has tons of bakeries with fabulous pies to indulge in - but which ones are the best? Check out this list to find out.
Grand Traverse Pie Company
1446 W. Maple Road
Troy, MI 48084
(248) 458-0322

Grand Traverse Pie has locations across the state, but in the metro area you can find it at this location (Troy), on Zeeb Road in Ann Arbor, and in Plymouth. Its menu is similar to a Panera Bread in that it has sandwiches, soups, and salads, as well as (of course) pie. Its pie varieties range from the standard fruit (apple, cherry) to crumb pies (cherry crumb, with a delicious crumble on top) to more hearty pies like pecan pie and chocolate mousse; they even have meat pies to order as an entree. GT Pie will also be doing free pie slices with any purchase on March 14, so make sure to head in to get your free slice.

Mrs. Maddox Cakes
24071 Orchard Lake Road
Farmington Hills, MI 48336
(248) 427-9422

Mrs. Maddox Cakes, founded in 1928 by Pearl Maddox, is now owned by her son and his family. Mrs. Maddox's sells pies, tea sandwiches, cookies, and other desserts, including different varieties of cakes (wedding, holiday, occasion, etc.). Small pies are $4, and large pies start at $8. The bakery is located at the corner of 10 Mile and Orchard Lake Road, in Farmington Hills.

Achatz Handmade Pie Co.
17736 W. 13 Mile Road
Beverly Hills, MI 48025
(248) 594-6111

Achatz Pies has seven Michigan locations, five of which are in metro Detroit: Chesterfield, Shelby Township, Ann Arbor, Troy, and this location (Beverly Hills, near Southfield). You can choose from fruit, cream, or a savory pie, including variations like blueberry double crust (fruit), banana cream, and beef or chicken pot pie. Full pies start at $16.99 and can be ordered online for in-store pick-up or to ship to someone. Achatz has been featured on such TV shows as "The Rachael Ray Show," "The Today Show," and "Good Morning America Weekend," and in many magazines as well, such as Bon Appetit and Food & Wine.

Dangerously Delicious Pies
4626 3rd St.
Detroit, MI 48201
(313) 727-7437

Dangerously Delicious Pies, a self-dubbed "rock and roll pie shop," can be found inside the Third Street Bar in Detroit. Rodney Henry and Don "Doop" Duprie started the pie shop as a way to pay the bills - they're both musicians - and they sell both fruit and cream pies as well as savory pies like those filled with meat. There are also some vegetarian-friendly savory pies for purchase. You can find Dangerously Delicious's pies in the back of the Third Street Bar, and its pie flavors vary by day.

Sister Pie
8066 Kercheval St.
Detroit, MI 48214
(313) 447-5550

Sister Pie opened in early 2015, and it sells pies and cookies, usually "seasonally driven" - you'll find apricot and blueberry pie in the summer here and apple pie in November. All of its pie crusts are handmade using the freshest ingredients, such as French butter and unbleached flour, and its bakers enjoy whipping up unconventional flavor combinations, such as Salted Maple pie, Ginger Peach Biscuit, Grapefruit Black Pepper Meringue, and others. Sister Pie first launched during Thanksgiving 2012, and you can find its cookies and hand pies at other Detroit shops too such as Shinola (Midtown) and Parker Street Market (West Village).
