Man, 84, in custody after hours-long barricaded situation in Southfield

An 84-year-old man was taken into custody on Friday night following an hours-long standoff in Southfield.

CBS News Detroit was at the scene near Winchester Street and Lahser Road when the man was taken in roughly seven hours later, sometime after 10 p.m. Police say the man was taken to a hospital.

Police Chief Elvin Barren said earlier in the day that the man, who was believed to be suffering from a mental health crisis, fired several shots inside the home and refused to come out. Police confirmed to CBS News Detroit that the man's wife and caretaker were inside the home at one point, but were able to make it out safely.

No injuries were reported at the time.

Police say that at one point, they sent a drone into the house, and the man threw a sheet over it. Barren says a weapon was accidentally discharged in the house that struck the door, but they do not believe the man was trying to harm police.

"I did speak to the family, and they say, 'Well, chief, we don't necessarily think he had a mental health crisis, but rather, he took some medication, and it may have altered his state of being,'" Barren told CBS News Detroit.

Police say the man eventually agreed to set his handgun on the bed and come outside.

Resident Carin Poole, who lives nearby, says the neighbor witnessed another barricaded situation about five years ago. However, that incident ended tragically.

Police say that in addition to the handgun, a shotgun was found on the dresser. Barren says he is considering submitting a protective order to keep the firearms, so a similar situation does not happen again.
