Another Case Of Maggots In Food At Michigan Prison

JACKSON (WWJ/AP) - Authorities say a second incident of maggots being found in a Michigan prison's food service area has been reported.

The latest case happened Tuesday at the Charles Egeler Reception and Guidance Center in Jackson.

A spokesperson for Aramark Correctional Services, Michigan prison system's food contractor, said maggots were found on one spoiled potato in a bag in a facility's storage area.

"We immediately disposed of all potatoes at that facility, and none were prepared or served," Karen Cutler told the Detroit Free Press. "As a precautionary measure, we have ordered our third-party auditor to visit all of the facilities throughout the state to ensure they meet our high safety and sanitation standards."

Corrections Department spokesman Russ Marlan said the entire kitchen area was cleaned with bleach while authorities notified Aramark of the situation.

It was the second time in less than a week that maggots were found in prison food facilities. At least 30 prisoners at the Parnall Correctional Facility in Jackson were treated for food poisoning symptoms after maggots and fly larvae were found in a food line last Friday.

Gov. Rick Snyder complained Tuesday of a "number of issues" with Philadelphia-based Aramark's performance as the food provider in Michigan prisons. Snyder said he may reconsider the company's 3-year, $145 million contract.

Aramark was hired in December as part of a cost-cutting move. Since taking over, the company has come under fire for employees smuggling in contraband and fraternizing with inmates. In March, the food service giant was fined $98,000 for various violations.
