After four games with the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens, catcher Alex Avila is on his way back to the Detroit Tigers.
The Tigers placed Avila on the seven-day disabled list because of post-concussion symptoms, and having completed his rehab assignment, Avila is returning to Detroit. In a corresponding move, the Tigers have optioned the contract of catcher Bryan Holaday to Toledo, though they will bring him back next week as part of September call-ups.
Avila also missed time at the end of June with a left forearm contusion. Detroit manager Jim Leyland said he has never seen a catcher take as many foul tips as Avila has this season and that Avila will be wearing a heavier mask to better protect him.
