Daniele Bonera's goal gave AC Milan a 5-3 penalty-kicks victory over Panathinaikos after a scoreless draw Friday in a preseason exhibition, the first major sporting event at the Pontiac Silverdome in seven years.
The game, which drew an announced crowd of 30,514, was played on a temporary grass field like the one used for the 1994 World Cup.
After the first seven shooters converted, Panathinaikos' Antonios Petropoulas shot wide, allowing Bonera to clinch the game.
Panathinaikos dominated play, but Djibril Cisse had a first-half goal disallowed for offsides, and the Greek champs lost what appeared to be a legitmate goal in the 55th minute. Sidney Govou's shot off the crossbar crossed the line before being cleared by Bonera, but the officials did not give the goal.
American defender Oguchi Onyewu did not play for Milan while continuing to recover from a knee injury that cost him most of last season and limited him in this summer's World Cup.
