2 Injured After Speeding Car Hits Tree, Catches On Fire

DETROIT (WWJ) -- After a speeding car refused to stop for police, a short chase ended with a vehicle colliding with a tree and bursting into flames on Monday night.

June West, Director of Media Relations with the Detroit Police Department, told WWJ Newsradio 950's Gary Lundy that a black Chevy Impala SS was travelling southbound on Mound Rd., going about 80 miles per hour at around 8 p.m.

Detroit Police attempted to stop the vehicle without success. The car hit a tree and then burst into flames near McNichols, on the city's east side.

Police officers were able to get the driver and passenger out of the vehicle. The driver is in critical condition and the passenger is in serious condition. Both are black males.

A female officer was burned when she pulled the two men out of the car and suffered burns to her hands and arms.

Police did not say if the vehicle was stolen or if the two people in the car have criminal records.
