2 Detroit Sites Considered For Justice Complex
Cash-strapped Wayne County is considering two sites near Greektown for a $700 million justice complex that would merge jails and courts under one roof.
Commissioners on Thursday voted 14-1 to issue notices of intent to issue bonds. Officials in the county facing an $85 million deficit are expected to take a final vote Nov. 4.
The Detroit News says the plan includes a $300 million jail and $400 million court.
Supporters say the plan would save $20 million to $30 million annually by reducing jail and court operating costs, and won't raise taxes. Commissioner Laura Cox cast the sole dissenting vote, saying it's a good idea but the wrong time.
Possible sites include one across from the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice and another at the soon-vacated Detroit Police headquarters.
