Hunter plays wide receiver and cornerback and was making interceptions and catching touchdowns all throughout the season. Last month Hunter set CU's single-season record for most TDs by a Buffaloes receiver when he recorded his 14th. And last week he was named Big 12 defensive player of the year.

The other finalists are Dillon Gabriel of Oregon, Ashton Jeanty of Boise State and Cam Ward of Miami.

The winner of the award will be announced at a ceremony in New York City on Saturday.

On Friday in New York, Hunter spoke to CBS Colorado Sports lead anchor Romi Bean and other reporters. Bean asked Hunter what he thinks being a finalist means to his teammates.

"I am a hard worker ....  I'm going to lead the way for them," Hunter said.

Hunter said this is one of the biggest moments in his football career, in a sport he has loved since he was little.

"Being here now is like a dream come true. I never dreamed of it but I'm here now," Hunter said.

Bean asked Hunter what he'd do with the award if he wins.

"(It's) going to be front and center in my game room, you know. Hopefully I'd get to put in all the uniforms that I played in, all the cleats, and all the 'drip' that I had on in some sort of picture frame and have the trophies in front," Hunter said.

The last Colorado player to be a finalist for the award was Rashaan Salaam in 1994. Salaam went on to win the trophy.
