Weapons Found Near Standley Lake High School

WESTMINSTER, Colo. (CBS4)- Some weapons were found near the soccer field at Standley Lake High School on Wednesday.

The high school campus supervisor found a shotgun and a rifle near an athletic shed and a fence on the athletic field during a routine search. K9 officers searched the area further for weapons. The K9 officers were also used to search for other items that may have been left behind.

The school was placed on lockout status. All students were safe and there had been no threats at the school.

Police in Westminster are investigating the situation. They believe the guns came from a burglary at a house that's adjacent to the school grounds. They think the burglar was hiding the guns on school grounds with the intent to return to them because they were too large to carry during a midday burglary.

Police were very clear to say they never believed anybody at the school was in any danger and they are still searching for the burglar.

"We had received no prior threats. There was nothing on our radar that indicated that this was anything related to the school other than that this property backed up to the school," a police spokesperson said. "A burglary was committed and this was the easiest way out of that home."

Police don't currently have a suspect in the burglary.

Standley Lake High School is located at 9300 W 104th Ave. in Westminster and is in the JeffCo School District.
