Darsean Kelley, 25, has since been arrested. Lewis told CBS4 her son has schizophrenia.

Denver Public Schools opened their doors to help students and parents mourn.

"I think it is important, when you are grieving, to have a neutral person to talk to," said Ellen Kelty, a spokeswoman for DPS.

She said parents should start a conversation with their students to touch base and see how they're feeling amid the loss.

"Talk to them about how they feel sad, or maybe really mad. They may not know what to say or do. Ask them, 'Have you talked to your school social worker? Because they are there to help you."
