Police: Officer Behind Murder Plot Of Ex-Girlfriend And Her Boyfriend

BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4)- Detectives believe a police officer, arrested for stalking his ex-girlfriend, was plotting to kill her and her new boyfriend. All three work for the Boulder Police Department.

Christian McCracken faces an attempted first-degree murder charge and felony stalking.

McCracken, 31, is a five-year veteran with the force. The people he was allegedly targeting are Boulder Police dispatchers.

Boulder Police Chief Mark Beckner said the case involving three of his employees is unfortunate.

"First of all you are shocked, disappointed and then finally concerned," said Beckner.

Court documents show the case started in Broomfield with a harassment investigation and then elevated to a murder plot out of Boulder.

Beckner said McCracken showed up at the police department while he was on medical leave for a head injury and tried to get his police-issued gun.

"He obtained his gun out of property and evidence and did that through some deception. That was a big part of it," said Beckner.

According to the arrest affidavit out of Broomfield , McCracken's ex-girlfriend said the harassment started after she broke up with him.

She said McCracken would call her, text her 10-20 times a day and she constantly felt like she was looking over her shoulder and had to "watch her back."

McCracken's attorney said he remains in custody.

"Nobody likes that place. Nobody wants to be in jail. He's confused," said McCracken's attorney Chris Griffi.

McCracken has not been on active duty since August, when he was attacked by a drunk University of Colorado student. He was hospitalized with a head injury at that time.

The student, Treven Hunter, admitted he fought with McCracken after refusing to pay a $3 bar tab. Hunter, 23, was sentenced to two years in jail on Thursday. He will be able to take his finals at CU before he begins his sentence.
