Man Shot, Killed After Fights Near Downtown Denver

DENVER (CBS4)- Police in Denver investigated a deadly shooting in downtown Denver early Sunday morning.

Police said it started as a fight around 1:20 a.m. Sunday near the intersection of 11th and Broadway.

Detectives said the suspect, identified as Marvin Joel Rosario-Lopez, 24, allegedly pulled out a gun and shot another man. The victim died a short time later at the hospital.

"The initial investigation has determined that several groups of individuals were involved in a physical altercation when the suspect produced a weapon and fired, striking the victim," police said in a statement.

Rosario-Lopez was arrested.

Police have not identified the victim. They also have not pinpointed the exact location of where the fight started but there are reports from witnesses that it happened at a bar or nightclub near 11th and Lincoln.

Several blocks surrounding the shooting were blocked off Sunday morning from 10th and Lincoln to 11th and Broadway and 11th and Sherman.

Some area residents say the shooting comes as no surprise because there have been others within a two block radius over the years. Others say it still comes as a shock.

"I'm not that familiar with it. I grew up in a small town in Wisconsin, so it's always new to me," resident Dustin Waltz said.

Police say they've stepped up patrols in the area, especially on weekends with the bars are closing.

"We've known that and we have accounted for that. We have a numerous number of officers in the area," Detective John White said. "We anticipate that there's going to be large crowds and we staff for that purpose."

Police say Rosario-Lopez's mug shot won't be released just yet because they need all of the witnesses to be able to identify him in a lineup first. He does have a criminal record that includes a long list of felony charges that are all drug related.
