Gunman Fires On Police During Standoff In Lakewood

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (AP) -- A gunman fired on police as he holed up in a Lakewood home with a woman and three young children for more than five hours before being arrested Saturday, authorities said.

The suspect was the only person injured during the standoff that began about 10 p.m. Friday as police responded to a domestic disturbance report, the Lakewood police dispatch office said.

Police said the suspect opened fire shortly after officers arrived and then remained inside the home near West 13th Place and Kline Street with the women and children, refusing to negotiate with police.

Officers and a SWAT team took positions around the house, blocked off surrounding streets and urged people in the area to remain inside their houses.

The woman, believed to be the man's wife, managed to flee early during the standoff but the children remained with the gunman.

The dispatch office didn't have details on how the standoff ended but said police somehow managed to hit with the suspect with a stun gun. He was arrested at 3:30 a.m. Saturday.

The children were found unharmed. The office said it didn't know if the two adults were their parents.

The gunman was being treated at a hospital for an injury, but dispatchers didn't know if it was from the stun gun or a firearm.

No names were released and there were no immediate details on the charges the suspected faces.
