Mayor Brandon Johnson backs down in budget fight, won't veto rivals' spending plan

Chicago has avoided a city government shutdown in 2026. After the City Council gave its final approval to a spending plan over the weekend, Mayor Brandon Johnson on Tuesday said he wouldn't veto the budget he opposed, but he's not signing it either.
