A United Airlines flight to Washington, D.C. was returned to O'Hare International Airport Monday afternoon, after a hailstorm left the windshield cracked.
"At one point during the pandemic, United Airlines had more pilots then they were flying passengers. That should give you an idea what they were up against," CBS News travel editor Peter Greenberg said.
"No one knows what's going to come next and how to prepare."
Airline officials said Monday that the agreement will reduce involuntary job cuts to fewer than 12,000 if Congress fails to provide more aid to airlines before a Thursday deadline. The company sent layoff warnings to 36,000 employees in July.
The airline starts the program October 15 for customers flying from San Francisco to Hawaii. If it works there, United hopes to offer testing at its major hubs across the country.

United said last week that it expected to furlough 16,370 employees in October, including 2,850 pilots, to shrink the airline in line with falling travel demand during the pandemic.
Airline officials had outlined 36,000 potential furloughs in July. Since then, thousands of workers took early retirement, buyouts, or long-term leaves of absence.
