CHICAGO (CBS) -- Tensions are boiling over in the Norwood Park neighborhood on Chicago's Northwest Side where an off-duty Chicago police officer shot and killed a dog, reports WBBM's Nancy Harty.

Samantha Maglaya says her family had just gotten home Friday afternoon and one of her children let their dog out in the backyard in the 5800 block of North Oketo.

Moments later, she says she heard gunshots and saw an off-duty cop still holding his gun and her four-month-old pit bull bleeding.

"I ran to my dog and my kids were standing all around him screaming and crying," said Maglaya

The officer told police he was protecting his five-year-old son riding his bike and the animal broke loose started chasing him.

Maglaya estimated that Maximus weighed about 35 pounds. She says there was no child around, just the officer.

"There was no son there. The whole time I was holding my dog and he was bleeding all over us and the kids are screaming and crying, his son was not there," said Maglaya.

The independent police review authority is investigating.
