Waukegan Ice Cream Parlor Hit Hard By Blue Bell Recall
(CBS) -- Blue Bell Creamery has recalled every product on store shelves and in restaurants because it could contain a deadly bacteria, and one ice cream parlor in Waukegan has been particularly hard hit.
The Original Parlor in downtown Waukegan will be closed until June 1, according to its Facebook page, due to Blue Bell's voluntary recall of all its products.
It's lights out after three years of scooping up tasty concoctions to scores of customers because 10 people in the last five years have become ill and three died from the listeria bacteria linked to the ice cream maker.
"I'm very concerned," said Shalonda Friar I didn't know there had been a recall," said Shalonda Friar. "Do I need to go to doctor and get checked out?"
The advice from Blue Bell? If you feel sick go to the doctor. The parlor is among the many local retailers forced to stop selling Blue Bell. Chicago area Outbacks had to stop serving it and Walmarts pulled it from store freezers.
Until the company has resolved the problem, Blue Bell ice cream is out of production.
"At least they're doing the proper thing by closing so they're not putting anyone else at risk," said customer Gege Said.
Outback restaurants say they have replaced Blue Bell with another national brand.
Blue Bell officials say their plant in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma will remain closed while the investigation continues.
