UPDATED 06/12/17 - 11:45 a.m.

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Chicago police have identified a toddler found wandering alone at Rainbow Beach Park on Sunday.

The boy, who appears to be 2 or 3 years old, was found at the beach at 2873 E. 75th St. shortly before 10 p.m. Sunday.

Detectives spent hours trying to determine the boy's identity and how he ended up at the beach alone. Shortly before 11:30 a.m. Monday, police said the boy had been identified and his family had been located.

Officials did not say how they learned the boy's name, or how he ended up alone at the beach. Police also were not releasing any information on his whereabouts.

Lisa Black, who came to the beach Monday morning with her 5-year-old grandson, said she was dismayed no one filed a missing person report about the child.

"That is so scary. If i was out here, I'd grab him too; take him, call the police, something. That's terrible that people have not reached out to find out what's going on with a 2-year-old; and why was he out here by himself?" she said.

No one was in custody as of 11:30 a.m. Monday.
