CHICAGO (CBS) -- An active shooter situation at a middle school in Richmond, Indiana, ended Thursday morning with the teenage gunman killing himself, after police confronted him inside the school.
Indiana State Police said, shortly after 8 a.m., police in Richmond were alerted to a possible act of violence about to occur at Dennis Middle School. The school was immediately locked down, and when officers arrived, they confronted a 14-year-old boy who shot out the glass of a locked door, and ran inside the school.
Officers chased the boy inside, and exchanged shots with him. Police said the boy died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, but it was not clear if he also was shot by police.
Police said the boy was not a student at Dennis Middle School. No students or officers were wounded.
"The fortunate part of this, if there is any, is that no students were injured, and no officers; mainly because someone knew something and they said something. They warned police, and police were able to respond. The school was able to follow procedure to help protect students here," Indiana State Police Sgt. John Bowling said.
Police declined to identify the boy, or to say what type of weapon he was carrying.
Richmond Community Schools officials said all schools in the district were locked down as a result of the shooting. Students at Dennis Middle School later were evacuated to nearby Richmond High School. All other schools in the district resumed normal schedules on Thursday.
Visibly shaken parents rushed to pick up their children after learning about the shooting. For one mom, she said she can't take the fear anymore.
"It's getting harder and harder for these kids to be able to go to school. I'm scared to death," Anna Martinez said. "We're probably going to pull our kids out of school, and home school them for the rest of the time. It's the only way that we know it's going to be safe."
Richmond, Indiana, is about 70 miles east of Indianapolis, along the Indiana-Ohio border.
Authorities have not said if the shooter was a student at the school, and have not released his age.
